Cherry Blossoms in the Time of Crisis

Cherry Blossoms in the Time of Crisis

Cherry Blossoms Portland, Oregon

The waterfront along the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon, March 2020

We are in the midst of a serious crisis. There is a lot of news and uncertainty out there and all around us, and it needs to be taken seriously and wisely.

But it's also important to remember, that trees bloom, the sun shines, the rain falls, and the birds sing. Take the time to inhale, look around and appreciate the beauty around us.

We need 'hanami'—the Japanese term for blossom-watching now more than ever. There is a deep tradition in Japan. There is a belief that the blooms hold secrets that can help put the pandemic, and existence, in perspective. They represent life itself, the fragile and finite nature of existence and the interconnectedness of everything.
